Por el aeropuerto de Beirut, el más grande de Líbano, pasan más de 5.000 de toneladas de mercancía cada día. Pero en marzo del año pasado una caja que no estaba sin marcar y sin datos alertó al personal.
La caja teína varios huecos e iba para Siria. Durante 7 días estuvo paralizada en el aeropuerto – hasta que un juez autorizó abrirla.
Y cuando el personal de la aduana y defensores de los animales vieron el contenido, no lo podían creer.
La caja medía más o menos 40 centímetros de altura y dentro había 3 tigres siberianos.
El tigre siberiano es el felino más grande del mundo y la raza está en peligro de extinción – hoy en día solamente hay 500 y viven en el este de Rusia.
Liberaron a las crías que estaban prácticamente deshidratadas y en muy mal estado. Estaban tumbados en sus propios heces, lo cual explicaba el fuerte olor de la caja.
Los tigres habían estado atrapados en este infierno durante más de una semana. No había ninguna información sobre los tigres y no sabían si habían sido vacunados.
La convención de Washington dice que está prohibido transportar a animales que están en peligro de extinción o plantas, a través de fronteras, sin permiso. Solamente uno de los tigres tenía un chip y lo pudieron rastrear.
Animals Libanon, una organización de Líbano que trabaja protegiendo a los animales, se tuvo que encargar de los tigres.
A causa de que la caja estaba impregnada de orina las patas de los tigres estaban sangrando, con heridas e infectadas. Los tigres no se podían poner de pie en la caja y todos tenían diarrea y sufrían de problemas digestivos.
Luego se supo que los tigres habían sido vendidos por un parque zoológico e iban a ser transportados donde una persona privada en Damasco, Siria.
A causa de la guerra civil en Siria, y al no estar documentada, la caja se quedó en Beirut.
Según reportes, la madre de los tigres supuestamente había tenido mínimo doce crías desde 2012. Nueve de estos, según los reportes, han sido vendidos a compradores «privadas/ compradores anónimos».
Cuando liberaron a los tigres los llevaron directamente a un veterinario especialista en animales exóticos. Bajo su supervisión, la condición de los tigres ha mejorado mucho y los tres pequeños también han recibido sus propios nombres: May, Tania y Antoun.
El zoológico ucraniano ha presionado a las autoridades de Líbano y han pedido que les devuelvan los tigres.
«Grandes felinos valen mucho en el mercado negro, se trata de mucho dinero. El dueño quiere que le devuelvan los tigres, pero lucharemos para mantenerlos», dice un portavoz de la organización de animales Animals Lebanon.
Unas semanas después llegaron más noticias nuevas de Líbano. El Ministerio de Agricultura libanés había decidido encargarse de los tigres.
Los animales inicialmente se quedaron con los animalistas en «Animals Lebanon».
Luego Mayo, Tania y Antoun se mudarán a una reserva natural para tigres, ¡muy bien!

They can only be traded under very specific circumstances, and only when a number of other conditions are met.Officials have already stated that the transport conditions do not meet the regulations of CITES or IATA Live Animal Regulations. The owner, exporter and shipper is one man listed as 'Private Entrepreneur'…Animals Lebanon submitted today our case asking for the animals not just to be seized, but to be permanently confiscated.The Ministry of Agriculture, Judge of Urgent Matters and Customs have all made the right decisions. Now they need a decision to permanently protect them and prevent them from becoming part of the multibillion dollar wildlife trafficking industry!

Organizaciones de derechos de animales como «Animales Lebanon» merecen nuestro apoyo. No sé cuántos animales habrían muerto si no fuera por todos los voluntarios y amantes de los animales que hay por el mundo.
«Luchan todos los días para el bienestar de los animales – casi nunca reciben pago por su trabajo.
Los amantes de los animales siempre están ahí, cuando la sociedad, los legisladores y los dueños de los animales fallan con algo fundamental: Proteger y amar a los animales.
Si ves un animal sufriendo, no dudes en ponerte en contacto con las autoridades o una organización local de derechos de los animales. Independientemente si se trata de tigres exóticos, gatos ordinarios o vacas de campo, ¡ningún animal merece ser maltratado!
